LuminAID Solar-Powered Inflatable Light

 Have you ever seen this?

It’s a LuminAID Solar-Powered Inflatable Light. We came across this little gem just a few weeks ago and have been intrigued ever since. It’s a light weight bag, powered by the sun can be a great light for your boat. Although the advertise that these are not just nautical instruments and can be used any where, at any time and for any reason, we like the idea of putting one on the deck of the boat. If needed you can probably even strap one to the bow of your boat as a sort of temporary light on your boat used for night time sailing.

Here are the Specifics From Their Website:

  • Weight:
    3 ounces / 85 grams
  • Dimensions:
    12.5″ L x 8.5″ W (when deflated)
  • Storage and Battery Function:
The LuminAID can hold a full charge for ~4 months. Before storing for an extended period of time, it is best to make sure the battery is fully charged. We also recommend charging every 1-2 months to keep the battery at optimum condition.

The LuminAID is water-resistant and can float.

It all started when Anna Stork and Andrea Sreshta met while studying architecture and design in graduate school. Sharing a an interest in solar lighting technology and a passion for helping solve problems on the global scale they designed the LuminAID.  In 2010 earthquake disaster in Haiti, the LuminAID was created to help fulfill the basic need for light when no power was working. Since then, they have come to the relief in many natural disasters in the U.S. and around the world. For the same space that it takes to pack 8 regular-sized flashlights, you can pack 50 inflatable Luminaids. Not only that, but for every LuminAID you buy in their program, they will donate one to their Give A Light Project to help build up the supply for the next natural disaster. Their goal is to make light more sustainable, available and affordable for all. Their cool invention has now been featured in Men’s Journal, on CNN, The Huffington Post, Forbes, BBC, Fast Company, The White House, WiReD and more.

I love my LuminAID lights, and they came in amazingly handy last season on my 20′ Balboa. When not in use, they fold up small enough to fit in any pocket or side shelf. Lit, they are great lightweight lights for dozens of uses.
