Hobie Cat 16

How We Got Into Hobie Cat 16’s and Why We Love Them So Much

Our Hobie- Yuba Lake, UT

I thought I would give a little background. A couple of years ago we purchased our first Hobie Cat. We spent months getting it ready to sail for the summer. It was a ’79 so it had problems with soft spots on the hulls. After re-enforcing them and a new paint job we were off and sailing. We were hooked pretty much the first time we took it out on the water.

Since then, we have bought the boat you see above an ’85. It’s a much better boat, and by that I mean faster, of course! There’s nothing quite like being out on the water, wind in your face, the sounds of the hulls slicing through the water against the fluttering of the sails in the high wind. It’s magic! If you’ve experienced it, you know what I’m talking about, if you haven’t then call us up & we’ll go for a ride!

I am purchasing a used Hobie 16. This will be my first sailboat. I know it needs work, so that will be my Fall-Winter and maybe some Spring task. My main concern is I am 70 years old, in pretty fair condition and not many friends who are as daring as I. Any recommendations on single handed rigging and sailing of my Cat? I don’t plan on racing and my past has including kayaking and surfing on the Pacific Ocean. I plan on flatwater sailing only. Central Valley California has many lakes and reservoirs. Sure would appreciate your input. Thanks

Corki- Thank you for your comment and congrats on purchasing a Hobie 16. It’s a great boat and obviously we love it. It’s taken some time to get back to you on this comment since we have been trying to find the best way to rig your 16 and set it up on your own. It’s pretty simple as far as rigging goes, however stepping the mast on your own can be a beast. We prefer to have at least two strong people around to do it. Here are two YouTube links to guys who have done it solo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOUqUosHb5E OR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kUJGgtI-B8. If you have any more specific questions feel free to shoot us an email. Thanks & Good luck! PS-Sailing on lakes and reservoirs still makes for some great sailing!
