How can I include my sailing experience in my General Resume?

Posted by admin on 21 Jan 2010 | Tagged as: sailing

I have been sailing for over 5 years on Lake Huron. I have done countless buoy races and several long distances races, including 3 from Port Huron to Mackinac. As any long-time sailor knows, this activity builds character and teamwork skills. I would like to include these assets in my general resume, but am having trouble doing it in a way that is both concise and detailed. Please help.

When life gets windy, reef the sails, tighten the lines and get ready to smile.

I have been competitivly sailing on Lake Eire for 24 years… I’ve done the Port Huron to Mackinac race myself. Yes, sailing does build character and teamwork skills…. But none of that belongs on a resume.

A resume should be no more than 1 page long. It should include a breif Objective, your employment history, your educational background, and any certifications you have earned. If you still have room left on that one page after all of that to list your hobbies, then you need to go back and put more detail in about your work history.

How long would it have taken the boats and slaves to reach the sugar plantations sailing the middle passage?

How long would it have taken the boats carrying 500 slaves sailing the middle passage from africa to the sugar plantations duringthe slave trade around the 1700s?

Turn around to Europe of the boats from North America was measured [then] to be six months. This, depending on the weather conditions, weight and also other external factors [e.g pirates along the way & militia]

Cruise question: What is the difference between a sailing and a cruisetour?

Posted by admin on 17 Jan 2010 | Tagged as: sailing

I was on the Royal Caribbean site looking at cruises and it asked me whether i wanted a sailing or a cruisetour….. what is the difference between these?

A cruise tour is when you both sail on a ship and do a land tour too. Like going to Alaska, I did a land tour for 4 days before I got on the ship. We then sailed for 7 days. It was the best cruise ever and well worth doing a land tour since Alaska is sooo big.

Can I be a member of a sailing team with little sailing experience?

Posted by admin on 07 Jan 2010 | Tagged as: sailing

I have taken some sailing classes and this past summer I have sailed on a Gibsea 392 in the Mediterranean for a week. I prefer sailing with some other people rather than me renting out a boat and sailing by myself. Would you please let me know how is it possible to join a sailing team? And what are the requirements? I’m in the Baltimore, MD area.

Head to a local yacht club and start begging for rides.

Get acquainted with a sail team and let them know of your experience.

There are many captains looking for crew, you should hook on somewhere.

Where can I go to find parts for a hobie cat sail boat?

Posted by admin on 13 Dec 2009 | Tagged as: sailing

My dad (who knows a lot more about sailing than i do.. I really don’t know anything) was given a 20′ hobie cat sailboat. I don’t know know if that is just the type or name brand.. Things like missing the sail, no riggings, trailer tires need to be replaced, etc. Where is a good place for him online to look for these parts? I am mainly interested in parts for the boat. The trailer parts we can get here.
As much as my dad loves sailing, I don’t think he really knows where to get started. I’m trying to do some research to help him take that first step.

There is an extensive Hobie Cat owners network. Check with marina’s or dealers in your area for information on how to make contact. Good luck!

What is the best hand held GPS for sailing available at a reasonable cost?

Posted by admin on 13 Dec 2009 | Tagged as: sailing

I have a small 27 ft sailboat that I love and I am a newbie at sailing. I would like a great, all around, inexpensive but durable hand held gps. I see a lot out there, but many are very fancy and I am not technologically inclined. Any thoughts?

These are good hand held gps for hiking, boating :

1.Garmin GPS 76 Handheld GPS Navigator, The GPS 76 comes in handy almost anywhere, whether you’re hiking, driving, boating, or wandering around a city as a tourist. Its easy-to-use interface makes it immediately useful to novices, and as you learn to exploit its programmability and features it can become an extremely powerful navigation tool

2. DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 Handheld GPS, Great for taking along on boating trips, island explorations, and trips ashore, Navigating a Route on Water.

Where can I get a really exciting sailing poster?

Posted by admin on 09 Dec 2009 | Tagged as: sailing

I want a colourful, photo poster of an exciting sailing photo, like the famous Beken ‘Silk II’ photo that prompted Keith Beken’s retirement.
Where can I get one, preferably online?
I’m looking for the sort of exciting broach/near collision/surfing down a wave photo, and not too expensive.
Any ideas?

Try Ronstan. I dont know if they still print them, but they used to do amazing posters of some great boats. Ive got five of them up in my room (an 18 foot skiff, 49er, two Tornado cats and an A class). They are cool, a little part of sailing fashion and history, and are really cheap (i dont think i paid for any of them!) If you cant find these, try all the top photographers websites. Many of them would run posters of their favourite pictures, but you may have to pay for them and some would cost a fair bit, especially from the top marine photographers like Andrea Francolini, Thierry Martinez, and Luca Villata.

Here are the websites for those three…

My children would like to start sailing. I would like to buy them?

a dinghy. I don’t know much about sailing. Can anyone recommend a make of dinghy, what sort of price in sterling I should be looking at second hand. I like the look of a topper dinghy, but it looks like only one person can go on it. Could he take friend on that dinghy? What sort of things should I look out for or should I avoid when buying a dinghy. Any help gratefully received. As we are beginners, I don’t want to be conned. Thanks.

Topper Also produce a boat called a topper topez which appears to look like a big boat but there are three different boat set ups dependant on the level of the sailor this boat can fit 2 kids and is made of moulded plastic so for the beginner it is very robust and will take punishment. as your children progress this boat will too as the hull stays the same and the mast and sails get bigger to keep the interest of the sailor going. New i think they are between £1000 and £1500 for the basic set up. which should include the boat the mast and sails and a trailer (launching trolley).

Where is the best place for sailing in France ?

Posted by admin on 28 Nov 2009 | Tagged as: sailing

I will go on holidays in France in a couple of weeks, and I will go sailing with my girlfriend, but we do not know where to go. Any idea ?

Saint Tropez is full of millionaires’ yatchts.

On the Atlantic coast, facilities are best at St Malo, Ouistreham (near Caen), Cherbourg, Brest, La Trinité, La Rochelle, Le Havre, Lorient and Bordeaux.

In some ways, Mediterranean France is more suited to those who prefer to find their sailing pleasures ashore. Visiting such glittering places as St Tropez, Cannes or Antibes is an experience if you want to spend some time among the most beautiful collection of yachts in the world. Excellent facilities are to be found at Antibes, in the St Tropez-Cogolin area, Toulon and Marseille.

I have a sailing regatta in a few days and im absolutely terrified, what can i do?

Posted by admin on 25 Nov 2009 | Tagged as: sailing

started sailing 10 weeks ago with a group of friends, and the regatta is in a few days and im absolutley terrified! i know im kind of ready, but whenever i get on the boat (im crew) i just freak out and go all nervous and jumpy, even when the boat tips a tiny bit i panic. what can i do to stop this? i cant back out, and i have been worrying about this for days.

First of all let me welcome you to the wonderful and great world of sailing.

Sailing is fun and demanding at the same time. You did not say what kind of boat it is, but if it is a group of friends, then you are on a boat of some size. Maybe something like a 30 foot or so long boat.

A sailboat actually sails faster with a little healing of about 10 – 20 degrees. It reduces the wetted surface (friction), but does not shorten the waterline length (fast). Sailboats were made to heal, so don’t worry. If the angle gets near 90, then you can start to worry. If you are 30 – 45, then hang on, but don’t worry. At that much heal, the main should be reefed and a storm jib should be put flown.

Stay on the high side and remember the old rule: keep one hand on the boat. Dress warm and wear layers (do not wear jeans, they get heavy if wet). Go potty before getting on boat. Have fun and may you win your class.

Does anyone remember a book about a kid sailing in a boat?

Posted by admin on 21 Nov 2009 | Tagged as: sailing

The book is a little kids picture book and its about a kid who goes sailing in his boat and comes across many other boats filled with different characterized animals and at the end he finds his dad. Do you know the title?

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Max, a wild and naughty boy, is sent to bed without his supper by his exhausted mother. In his room, he imagines sailing far away to a land of Wild Things. Instead of eating him, the Wild Things make Max their king.
