Terry and Tyler Judd love sailing, As for me, Tyler. I am going to blame all my sailing problems on my Dad. He has been sailing most of his life, and in California he has owned a few boats over the years that include P cats, and hobies. When I was a little boy, my dad bought a small mono hull. It was only about 12 ft. long. Man did we have fun on that boat. We took it all over Utah, and sailed it like crazy.
When I was 22, I bought my own Hobie 16. It was a 1979, which is only the worst year that Hobie made sailboats. I picked it up for about $900. It was plagued with soft spots, and ugly sail colors. I spent three months working on it, fixing everything, but most of it was body work. I dismantled the boat, sanded everything off, fixed the soft spots, and re-painted the entire thing Artic White. After another $800 worth of work, and giving up my social life for three months It turned out pretty good.
Later that summer, My Dad and I wanted to test the waters of the racing world. Turns out we did pretty well, and in the Utah summer games, we won the gold medal in the Saturday event. We had a great opportunity to not only feel good about ourselves, but meet some other really great people. One person that we meet was a guy who said his friend selling his newer boat. It was a 1988 Hobie that was in the nationals. So we jumped on it, and sold my baby. Turns out that was a great move. This new boat has all quick pins, and a really nice single main sheet block. Before you know it, my Dad and I where flying all over the place. Ever since then we have been so addicted it’s now an obsession.
We hope that you love sailing as much as we do, and you will have some great advice for us as well. Happy sailing!
Tyler and Terry Judd
