Can someone please interpret this strange and creepy dream?

admin 20 Apr 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

Im in a dream where Im standing in an old boathouse and I look around and there’s old and dusty furniture and when I turn around there’s an elderly man in a rocking chair dressed as a tug boat captain smoking a pipe and when I back away a door nearby opens to perfect darkness and a wind tries to drag me into the door backwards as inhuman arms try to drag me into the darkness. The last time I held the door frame and pulled forwards but it was a tough tug-o-war. The elderly guy doesn’t bother me as he looks like an older version of myself in sailing gear but the arms and door is real horror movie stuff. Any ideas on what this means?
I have had this dream for years with different results but I never have been pulled in.

Hehe you watch too many movies :P

Any TWIC stories to share?

admin 20 Apr 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

After a long sail to Hawaii I wasn’t able to get off the navy base using my twic- they didn’t know what it was. Instead ended up using my expired MMD as ID. $135 for nothing so far.
Really? That’s good to know- last time I flew they had no idea what a twic was and didn’t care if it was from the govt. Maybe by the time I retire it will actually be usefull.
They preffered the old green and white z-card over the MMC since it says "US COASTGUARD" right on it and they had seen it more often.
Interesting outlook; I was just thinking it was someone’s way of paying back a favor to Lockheed Martin by giving them a couple hundred million in business.

Point out that on the back it says it is issued by the TSA of Homeland Security. It is being accepted at airports now in the US.

sailing routes question?

admin 17 Apr 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

when sailing from florida to california do you have to go through the panama canal?

Yes you do. Another way to go is around the Cape at the tip of South America. Very dangerous and a lot longer.

Should I get a Hobie-Cat or a Sunfish?

admin 17 Apr 2010 | : sailing

I’m 15 and I just learned/learning how to sail. I live in Oklahoma so it is very windy. Just a few hours away I have a lake place at a very big, ruff, choppy water lake, but also have instant access to a little, not as choppy lake. I don’t know if I should get a Sunfish sailboat, or a Catamaran Hobie-Cat. I like Sunfish’s more but don’t know if there appropriate.

Really really need help, need to make my decision and purchase before July!

both boats will be fun and will give you a chance to learn more about sailing, but my recommendation is to check out the sailing clubs on the lakes in your area and look at the classes of sailboats that are being raced there. sailboat racing is a lot of fun and being able to join a local fleet of boats and a sailing club will have a lot of rewards. sailboat racing gives you a chance to develope your sailing skills much faster than sailing alone. Oklahoma is a great place to sail with warm summers (and water) as well as the chance to sail in stronger winds.

we used to sail on ft. gibson lake, and kaw lake and enjoyed racing on each lake.

the sunfish is a great first boat, easy to rig and since it only has one lateen sail it is easy to sail, but is capible of planning and will require hiking in heavy wind. there are many different Hobie cat catamarans so it’s hard for me to comment of them with out knowing which one you are looking at. the two classic hobies are the 14′ and 16′ the 14′ can be single handed as can the 16′ but as the wind picks up you will need crew on the 16′ (on a wire trapeze).

there are many other boats to look at including the snipe, lazer. and other classes sailed locally.

hope this helps

Is there any storage in the hulls of a typical sport catamaran?

admin 05 Apr 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

I see photos of people sailing with no gear, no water, no supplies. There must be something in the hulls besides air or foam?

Most do. They have a screw cap on each hull, mainly for getting the water out in case they leak but you can store stuff in there but then if you capsize your gear may slide up the other end of the hull and it will be a pain to get em out.
There are generally netting pockets somewhere on the boat for storing light items like water or nav gear etc.

How hard is it to start a touring business in Hawaii?

admin 05 Apr 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

Okay, so it might be a crazy idea, but one of my step brothers knows how to sail (got his captain certification) and I know how to fly (although I’ll need to get my commercial certification). I was wondering what the probability of being able to start a sea and air tour company in Hawaii? Are there any special regulations and requirements? Are people who are not already living there and active in such a business locked out? Is the touring industry over saturated? Any useful information will be appreciated. And, yes, I’m ignoring the current economic situation. If anything happens it’ll probably take a year or more.

It is not overly hard.
