2003 VW 1.8T Won’t Move but, ENGINE RUNS FINE?

admin 24 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

I love my VW but, it has so many problems… I bought the car used of course back in march of this year… a week later the check engine light came on… took that in and they said it was a faulty coil and faulty coolant system… every time it hits 2nd gear it shifts roughly… After that repair 2 weeks later the check engine light came on again followed by a little red sailing boat… I believe that is the oil pressure boat… the thing on the dashboard that has the c and the h for hot and cold??? Then few months later the car starts leaking coolant… I get that repaired… then weeks after that the battery died… replaced that… then this past Saturday I drove it a short distance on the way home… getting off the ramp waiting at the light the car wouldn’t move… and prior to that the check engine and little red boat lights stayed on… but, the mechanics kept telling me it was an electrical problem and not to worry…and prior to that i noticed the car has been loosing power… didn’t accelerate as good… and when i’d be driving in certain gear the rpm would suddenly rev up… so, it’s been in the shop for two days and the mechanic doesn’t know what is wrong with it.??? but, from just word of mouth everyone is saying my transmission went out? But, keep in mind the car still started… the engine was running… everything was working it was just stalled… wouldn’t move… I just need to know what i’m looking at… if it is the transmission i’m getting rid of the car… to many problems…

You might as well get rid of it then, because your transmission is cooked. The hard shifting into second gear was an early indicator that you were about to have problems with it. Sounds like you bought a car that was rode hard and put up wet. Probably was never properly maintained in the first place.

Could lasers be used to push a solar sail to another solar system with say a 50 year travel time?

admin 24 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

I believe Arthur C Clark wrote a story discussing various solutions to the problems involved in engineering this. He even figured out a possible way to slow it on arrival and return the vehicle to Earth. Since he is the guy who invented the idea of geosynchronous orbit, I’m not going to say it can’t be done. Lots of intriguing possibilities.
From your questions it sounds like you need to get all of his stories you can find and read them. I also recommend Robert Forward for similar technical stories. And, a couple of your questions involve ideas I have not heard of, so if you can learn to write, you may have a career as an sf author.
Lasers do not expand the way described above.

rash on my butt from sailing?

admin 24 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

i have been sailing every day for almost 3 weeks now. around 2 hours a day. and i noticed afer showering that i have a small rash on my butt. its not in just one area but its on the seat of my tush small little red dots not that many but just a few. i thought it might be pimples but its not its just small spots like lightly freckled on the seat of my butt.

im thinking it might just be an abrasion rash because i am sailing in a small single person boat called a laser sailboat and the part i sit on gets wet every time i sail it either from rain or sea spray. so my shorts get wet and stay wet the whole time im out. and im just sitting the entire time moving from 1 side to the other over and over
its not painful itchy or anything. i didnt even notice it until now

so i have a soggy bum rubbing against my shorts and underwear and the boat every day. i just wondering what it is and how to help it. or if anybody has experienced this before

I get that too, and it really SUCKS! You get it when its warm and your shorts or wetsuit rubs your arse for hours on end for a couple of days in a row. I normally get it when im out sailing in a regatta, in between races. I itch like made, and look like a complete idiot, but i dont really have a choice. Worst one is when you have long fingernails and you scratch your arse too hard and it cuts, and then the cut hurts and the rash itches. Its HELL!!!

When your on dry land make sure you wash really well, and try and allow air to flow over…umm… the area. There isnt much you can do while your out sailing, other than trying to keep your arse dry. If you get wet and it starts to itch, try and ignore it. If you have a rescue boat out with you and your out for several races think about taking another pair of shorts or another wetsuit out if you have one. You only get it when your wet, so changing into a dry pair of shorts or wetsuit can help prevent the rash.

Im getting a laser soon, having grown out of 420s and gotten bored of 470s, so good luck with it!

Would a computerized system be designed with "smarts" to allow it to be easily set-to-work ?

admin 24 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

For example there might be a number of training levels, as in Virtua Fighter.

A integrator might set level 1 to work first.

Level 1 works and this serves as a basis for further set-to-work efforts.

It seems obvious but do system designers build this sort of quality in.
Equalyy importantly, I wonder if some system integrators disregard the existence of these training level, and perhaps schedule for a final demo where the whole system will go live, without any previous checking. Would a person who did this likely get a bonus for efficiency ?

I realise it’s not clear-cut. There could be a lot of merit in signing everything off as working, and for example if you’re Captain Cook, setting sail for Hawaii or wherever he was going. Perhaps running repairs can be done on the way. Perhaps the system is not fit for purpose anyway, if running repairs can’t be done on the way.

Seems possible, but it must be easier said than done.

what are the rules for boating/sailing around the world?

admin 24 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

lets say i bought a boat or a small yacht. anything were i can go aound the world or even island hopping. are there any special permits to get. what are the international sea rules or laws I would need to know before thriyng it. has anybody done something like this or similar?

To answer your last (sentence) question first yes I have done this! Now back to sentence number one !
If you paid for this yacht in full great bring along your proof, but if it is mortgaged then you will likely need a release from the lender! This may even be required in the contract!

Sentence number two the only permits required are the normal things like radio station licenses, radio operators permits, dog licenses, gun registrations,( in some countries these last two things may be confiscated regardless), documentation for the boat and the dinghy!

There are two many things that you would need to know
for the safety of you, your boat and your crew two list them here!
A USA Coast Guard Captains License would be a
very good thing to have for your own peace of mind about the
international sea rules and laws! You really need to know them but it’s not required.

Don’t forget your Passports and Visas

Is my period lightening, or will it go back to heavy?

admin 21 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

I’ve had my period for a year (I am 13).
My flows are always heavy, and usually on day 1 I can fill up an overnight pad in the full day(it gets heavier throughout the week).

My period came 2 days late, and I got it when I woke up so I put on an overnighter, around noon. It’s now almost 9, and all I’ve had is bloody/brown dischargeyness and there’s only 2 brown spots on my pad. This is unusual for me. Dont get me wrong, it’s great, but I think i’m getting my hopes up in thinking it’s gunna be like this the whole time.

Do you think tomorrow it’ll kick into gear and be my usual heavyness again? Or will it be smooth sailing the rest of the week, and my period is finally starting to change itself into lighterness. (My periods last 8 days)

Additional Details:
Oh and by me having a heavy flow, I mean on days 2 and 3 and sometimes 4 I can fill up an overnight in about 3 hours…..
Oh and I’ve never ever skipped a period, i’ve had my period every month since I started. And it’s always been the same heavy flow.
I do wear tampons sometimes.
But did you not hear me say there is 2 random brown spots? Not even blood. So it doesnt smell.

And my flow has always been the same so its never light, heavy, light and random.

thats kinda gross to me that you wear one pad all day lol. doesn’t it smell? anyways you should wear tampons it SOOO much easier. and smells and feels better lol. anyways periods are weird like sometimes mine are really heavy one month then the next month there light. but from what you said about them being the same since you’ve started, i wouldn’t get your hopes up. i would recommend birth control? it lightens them i think. good luck! and if you feel unconfortable about the heaviness and stuff talk to your mom or someone you feel confortable talking this stuff to. or go see the doctor.

Problem with Nissan Micra auto – gears? – Car experts help please!?

admin 21 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

Have a little Nissan Micra (1994). It has an automatic gearbox. Has given me 40,000 miles of trouble free motoring until yesterday.

It started with almost like a metallic rattling noise that progressively got louder, but not horribly loud. This may be unrelated.

The next thing I know is that when slowing down for a set of traffic lights, the way the car behaved was almost like (imagine driving a manual car) slowing to a stop in fourth gear without putting the clutch in, the way the car would judder and almost stall is what happened. The car did not stall, but almost like it forced itself to put the automatic clutch back in at the very last second, but not put it in quite enough for a smooth gear change. Starting up from scratch was the same, banging and jolting until up to about 30mph, then fine until you went to slow down again.

Started the car this morning, and it behaved fine until it was warmed up, and then the same behaviour started to rear it’s ugly head again.

The car sailed through it’s MOT three weeks ago, and I asked them to check the auto gear box oil and they said this was fine…..perhaps they left something like a screw or bolt loose in the gearbox??

Not being much of an expert on cars, I was just wondering if any car expert or mechanic has any suggestions. Does this sound fixable, or is it time to scrap the car (boo-hoo!).

Thanks for the help :-)

I very much doubt that they caused any damage, it’s most likely just a coincidence. The Micra’s automatic transmission is the CVT type (belt driven) opposed to the standard automatic 3 : 4 gear-box. They did have terrible trouble with them to start with but seem to have overcome that. I’d suggest you take it to an expert, it might be something easily fixed.

sailing – just sitting down?

admin 21 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

a friend and i were discussing about whether sailing was a sport or not. He said it wasn’t because all you did was sit down and it didn’t get you fit. I agreed with him in the fact that it doesn’t get you too fit however it is a category in the olympics and i think that Laser and Finn classes etc. require a lot of upper body and arm strength. Is it a proper sport or not?

It most certainly is a sport, not everyone could sail a boat as well as Ben Ainslie, it’s all about understanding the points of sail, how to get the best wind, where to have the sail, when to lean, and to know your limits. The more you practice, the better you will become. To be able to sail a Laser well, you have to be at the peak of your physical fitness, and be agile enough to move from side to side in the boat without losing speed. It also requires some upper body strength to right the boat in case of capsizes.

hepl with sailing essay?

admin 21 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

hey.

i have been asked to write a speech to present to a clas of 15 yr olds about sailing and im a bit stuck.

i have been on many traing weeks with a sailing scholl, part of he rya which i will talk about, but does anyone know any facts or things about the rya or the boats (laser pico, topper laser 2000) or even the school (cushendall)

Well, when I a little older (im 13) i really want to buy a laser, and I have looked into them a little, and they are 13 10.5 feet long, the first one was launched in 1971 at the New York boat show. The name for the laser prototype was "Weekender" It has a 12.5 foot waterline, and 76 square feet of sail. The laser is arguably the most competitive and close sailboat in the world. I knew most of this stuff, but I had to get the facts right, so if u need more, heres the website! good luck!

Can you help me write a short mystery story?

admin 21 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

I know its long but please help me!

Similar to this example:

Except for the ambulance attendants, Sheriff Monahan, nd Dr. Haledjian there as nobody at he Meadowbrook Bowling Lanes, the only alleys in town, except a young woman sprawled by the front door with a knife in her back.
"The lanes closed at minight," sd the sheriff. "One of my men discovered the body at 4 a.m., and I called you right away."
"Dead about an hour," said Haledjian. "Who was she?"
"Roberta yae," replied the sheriff. "She just married Theodore Layne, a merchant captain, before he sailed for Hawaii last week. They have a little house on Bleaker Street."
"Any suspects?"
"Charlie Barnett – maybe. Roberta jilted him for Ted."
Haledjian dropped a green fountain pen by the dor "Let’s pay Mr. Barnett a visit."
The suspect lived in a room behind the gaoline station he owned.
Haledjian’s first words were, "Do you know Roberta as been mudered"
"No!" gased Barnett.
"Well, that’s enough for now," said Haledjian.
Then, as if in afterthought, he added, "I must have dropped my fountain pen by te front dor of the lanes where we found the body. I’m duein the city in an hor. Mind ggetting the pen for me and leaving it with the sheriff this morning?"

Barnett looked uncertan. He shrugged. "Sure."
When he brught the pen to the sheriff’s office later that morning he was promptly arrested.

Why?

It needs to have a twist at the end, similar to this one. Obviously you don’t have to write the story for me, but can you help me come up with the twist?

By the way, the answer to this one was that the guy got the pen at the lanes, not the Laynes. If he hadn’t done it he would have assumed the pen was at the Laynes and not the bowling lanes.
well i know theres mistakes, i didnt write it, i found it online.

Ok he asked him to get his pen so that he could get finger prints without him knowing and it turns out when the finger prints come in that Barnetts prints were all over the murder weapon they arrested him until they could get the prints back from the lab.
or
Haledjian killed Roberta and needed Barnetts prints to cover up his prints so that he wouldn’t get caught.
or
usually no one would gasp NO!!! they would just say What? how? and he noticed that and arrested him

idk maybe i helped i love a good mystery =]

Am I romantic? Answers from women only?

admin 21 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

My gf says "you are never really romantic" – I’ve taken gf to aspen, cancun, hawaii, and more, sailing on ocean, boating in marina with wine and fresh seafood, watched fireworks over bay, wine/choco tasting, couples massage, rose petal baths, sent flowers to work, made creme brulee, outdoor concerts with wine and desert, and more in a span of a year and a half. And yet she says "you are never really romantic". I need input from a women’s perspective.

You are kidding right? Sounds to me like your girlfriend perhaps has never been with a man who wasn’t romantic because if you have done all you say then I’d say you are more romantic then 90% of the male population. Perhaps you should sit down and ask her what her idea of romantic is? Cause I’m a woman and even I’m confused as to why she would say that if you are doing all these wonderful things.

How can I include my sailing experience in my General Resume?

admin 21 Jan 2010 | : sailing

I have been sailing for over 5 years on Lake Huron. I have done countless buoy races and several long distances races, including 3 from Port Huron to Mackinac. As any long-time sailor knows, this activity builds character and teamwork skills. I would like to include these assets in my general resume, but am having trouble doing it in a way that is both concise and detailed. Please help.

When life gets windy, reef the sails, tighten the lines and get ready to smile.

I have been competitivly sailing on Lake Eire for 24 years… I’ve done the Port Huron to Mackinac race myself. Yes, sailing does build character and teamwork skills…. But none of that belongs on a resume.

A resume should be no more than 1 page long. It should include a breif Objective, your employment history, your educational background, and any certifications you have earned. If you still have room left on that one page after all of that to list your hobbies, then you need to go back and put more detail in about your work history.

I keep having a continuing dream, about a sail boat, roof and balloons and kites.?

admin 21 Jan 2010 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

My dream is one that reoccurs, I lying in bed there is an open gap in ceiling and I can see out side. From the edge of my curtains I can see a small sail boat with the sails unfurled. It’s windy out side and I’m watching the wind blow the sail boat that is tied off at the water spigot, into the air and I’m watching it through my window then the ceiling and back down. Then looking out the ceiling I see either hot air balloons or kites not the little kids kites but the huge kites. I then get woken up. Can someone tell me the meaning?

You see the sailboat "tied off at the water spigot" with the sails unfurled — you see your life sailing along nicely but is tethered — there is something holding you back from what you’re trying to do.

Then you see the hot air balloons and kites — you may likely achieve the things you reach for — as they are reaching higher and represent achievement.
