Question about a long sailing trip?

admin 21 Nov 2009 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

Where can I find all the necessary information needed to plan and carry out a long sailing trip? I was thinking of going from san diego to hawaii.

Thank you for your time and help!

Read "Sailing Alone Around the World" by Captain Joshua Slocum. He did not have the technology modern sailors have at their disposal and he didn’t sail the same route, but I think his wonderful account of solo sailing on a small craft is an excellent tale of the kind of attitude you need for that ambitious of a journey. One of my favorite books, and I’m not even a sailor!

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Max, a wild and naughty boy, is sent to bed without his supper by his exhausted mother. In his room, he imagines sailing far away to a land of Wild Things. Instead of eating him, the Wild Things make Max their king.

Wetsuit thickness for dinghy sailing and windsurfing for the San Francisco Bay?

admin 21 Nov 2009 | : sailing

I’m a 5’3" ~120lb female looking for a full-length wetsuit for the SF bay that is appropriate for dinghy sailing.. and possibly windsurfing in the near future. I’m planning to sail mostly in the late spring-early fall season and I’m looking into either a 3/2 or 4/3 wetsuit, but not really sure what to go with. Any advice would be appreciated–thanks!

If you’re definitely going to be winsurfing on the bay, go with a 4/3 (at least). The water in SF Bay is actually about as cold as the Irish sea. Right near the Golden Gate water temps are in the mid-50′s and only vary by a few degrees during the year. If you’re in the south bay, the water can be a bit warmer during the summer because it’s shallow and there’s not as much current carrying in the cold ocean water.

If you’re dinghy sailing, you might be able to get away with a 3/2, depending on how often you think you’ll fall in the water and how quickly you can get back in the boat. As a kayak outfitter on the bay, I put students in a 3mm farmer john with a windbreaker type jacket. This won’t keep you warm indefinitely, but it keeps you warm enough for the few minutes it takes to get things sorted out.

Is it possible to sail from Alaska to Russia by small boat ?

admin 21 Nov 2009 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

Or build bridges between small islands across Alaska and Russia and walk through?

Yes if neither side sinks you. Bridge building that big would be a national project, and a chunnel would probably work better in that weather. Might be a good idea, and I remember hearing that one of the big engineering firms was proposing it.
Don’t be paranoid, a tunnel or a bridge that big in a fixed location is much more easily destroyed than it is seized and held. This is what finally convinced the British to agree to the chunnel itself.

Small crack in sail boat hull, no access from inside.?

admin 21 Nov 2009 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

I have a small (4 – 6 ") crack in the bottom of a 16′ sail boat. I can not access the crack from the inside and am curious how I should repair from the out side. I’ rather not add mat to the out side of the hull. Thanks

Sounds like a job for marine-tex (2-part fiberglass putty).
Great stuff, no need to layer it up – it’ll cure in as thick a layer as you need then it can be sanded down. But if you’ll wet a finger and smooth it out before it cures, you probably won’t need to sand it. Bonds with fiberglass, wood, gelcoat. The keel of my old boat is just about all marine-tex now, after a couple fights with the trailer.
This is the stuff

BTW I’m not affiliated with this product, just a real big fan.

Now – if I misread, and the hull is actually breached, you’ve got some fiberglass work to do – 45 cal gives a pretty good description of how it’s done. Another good resource is the restoration forum over on http://forums.iboats.com – guys over there that can walk ya through it step by step.

What do you consider a non-lame Father’s Day gift?

admin 17 Nov 2009 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

I burn my dad CD’s for holidays. I’m looking around online for more ideas and it’s just a bunch of lame cutesy stuff. My dad likes canoeing and sailing, but is basically an expert and I don’t want to buy him gear or anything. So any non-lame ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

How do i get the stink out of my sailing gear?

admin 17 Nov 2009 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

We sail in salt water and my boots reek!!

Wash them in soap and leave them in the sun to dry. After you sail though wash them really well and then stuff them full of newspaper and put them in the sun. They will dry in about 20 mins, no matter what sort of boots they are. The quicker you wash and dry them, the less chance bacteria and rubbish have to build up on them and stink them out.

Personally, i dont really care if my boots smell. I just leave them in the boat and give them a wash before i sail. During a regatta though i do the newspaper thing, because there’s nothing worse than pulling on a cold, wet pair of sailing boots just before you go sailing. Its nearly as bad as pulling on a wet, cold wetsuit.

What weight is required to sail a Laser Radial competitively??

You just have to be like 115, around there. If you are strong you shouldn’t have a problm holding the boat down..

where can i para-sail in santa cruz california?

admin 17 Nov 2009 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

I want to go parasailing but cant find the closest place to do so!!!

Well the good news is that there are lots of places to para sail in California, the bad news is that most of them are either inland or south of you. One site mentioned either para sailing or a carnival ride on the Santa Cruz Pier or boardwalk that involves para sailing you might want to look into that. Your other options all seem to involve either Lake Tahoe, Catalina or the LA or San Diego areas.

Here are the links the info came from down below.

Good luck in your quest.

Family vacation to HAWAII – need tips please please?

admin 17 Nov 2009 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail

hello! My family is planning a trip to Hawaii this summer and we’re all very excited! We have been been to hawaii and I was wondering what is the best island for my family to visit! My family has two adults (my parents), my sister who is 24 and my brother who is 12 and I’m 19. We want to several things like stay at a place with lots of palm trees and beautiful scenery, go sailing, water parachuting, ride on speed boats and fun things that’ll make our vacation awesome =]! ANY help will really be appreciated! THANKS =]

Well it depends. What island have you been to before? If you want to see more or the night life, you are going to want to go to Oahu. This is where Waikiki is and it’s to me, the most developed. On Oahu though, there are also some places where it is more "countrified" and it’s not as city-like. If you want to go all out country, then you might want to try Maui. It’s less developed than Oahu but has a comfortable feel to it. I’ve only been to the Big Island once or twice when I was young so I can’t give you much help on that.

There are some hotels that I can reccomend though. If you do go to Oahu, there is a nice hotel down Ewa side. It’s called Ko’olina and it’s a kind of Marriot timeshare thing. Then on Waikiki side where you might want to stay for all the action that you want, there is the Hilton Waikiki. Both of these hotels have a tropical feel to it and both are extremely close to the beach.

If you go to the the Big Island, there is one hotel that I know of and it’s the Hilton Waikaloa. I’ve heard it’s really nice and a good beach and tropical spot.

On Maui, there is the Grand Wailea which is pretty nice and also the Marriott’s Maui Ocean club which is my favorite because of the nice pool that they have along with waterslide.

Now as far as activities go, you can pretty much find things to do on all of the islands.

If you ask me, all of the islands are different so depending on how much time you have, you should stop for a few days on each. If you don’t have much time or just don’t feel like moving around, I would say go to Oahu. You will get that Hawaiian city life as well as some country life. Oh and if you do go to Oahu, you should definetly go to Hanauma Bay. It’s got great snorkeling and a bunch of cool fish.

Let me know if you need any more help!!!
