Apparantly YA doesn’t like this question?
Isn’t it wonderful that instead of going to work or college they get to go sailing for the day, gee that seems better than going to uni all week and work all weekend like me, how nice of the NHS. And how lovely that they get this little treat for free, i bet their classmates who are working or studying are really kicking themselves now.
Mrs Atkinson, my neighbour down the street doesn’t think that this is fair as the NHS told her that they couldn’t afford to pay for life extending cancer drugs for her, she thinks that as she has paid national insurance all her working life that she should be entitled to these. Silly Mrs Atkinson, hasn’t she realised yet that this is not how the UK works? Why should she get help when there are unemployed teenagers out there who need cheering up!! I expect all the little rapscallions will be getting on their sailing gear and looking forward to a nice jaunty little day out. After all, why should they work if they don’t really feel like it, heck who can blame the little tykes!!

Oh it got deleted then undeleted lol.
that idea seems better than using your taxes to kill more innocent people in some other country, no?

Dont like the Daily Mail???
Try BBC news then….
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/humber/7669689.stm
They are still part of the NHS though.
Trust the Daily Mail to tell it like it is, Britain has always had training sailing ships and sea cadets, anyone remember the SS Conway which our one-time poet laureate John Masefield trained on, it then got wrecked in North Wales in the 1950s en route to a re-fit in Liverpool, but the nautical school remained for a number of years. One of the last of the old black and white ships, beautiful and irreplacable.

I don’t know what you are looking for in a boat…all the boats you have listed are good boats…the FJ (flying junior)is an older design that has a strong following, they were well built and had few problems…the Laser is quite different in that it is really a single person boat…two can go for a fun outting…the Laser is a boat that you can learn to sail in and continue to the toughest racing…a great boat…Laser 2..is a two man crew again with a good following…dito for the 420…one of the most important things to consider in buying a boat is wether or not there are others of the same class in your area’I'd stick with the strongest class in your area..the other thing is that the 3 two man boats you have picked are all for lighter crews and are not great for two good sized men

my dad gave me his laser sailboat which my cousin and I want to make into a pirate ship. Is there any kind of black adhesive that I could cut into a skull and crossbones and stick on the white sail. I don’t want to ruin the sail because it is in really good condition, but I also want to have a little fun with it.
My my lassie, appears your just a fledgling wantabe pirate! Afore you start raising cane on the local waters may I suggest you get some bandanas for your heads, a patch for your eye, and a BIG water cannon or gun. Oh yes a bottle or two of food coloring for ‘tinting’ the water gun output. Keep her light and fast for ghosting around.
Convert the crew not the boat.

How many days to sail down Baja California? Also, what would be a suitable sailboat? Length? Is it even safe for three people?
6 hours

There are parasailing places at several harbors along the southern CA coast, not sure on northern. Water temp has been dropping though… last Sat., off Newport Beach, it was in the lower 60s

We’ve scheduled a Hawaiian cruise on the Spirit of America, and may want to schedule our own land excursions. I am told they will pick you up at the dock and return you to the ship.
Are you familiar with Hawaiian tourism, esp. cruising? If you are, what suggestions would you have? What’s the best way to save money on excursions or other things to do while in port? Is there perhaps an agency over there that can book adventures & excursions for us?
What excursions have you done and enjoyed the most? We’re a retired couple, so hiking the Na Pali coast is probably out, but we’re open to any suggestions.
Also, if you have sailed on the Spirit of America, we’d appreciate any advice about the ship, ports of call, or cruising in general. This is "free-style" cruising, and anything you could tell us about that would also be appreciated.
Thanks a lot for your help!
There is a lady in Sarasota, Florida that is exceptionally knowledgeable on the subject of Hawaiian Cruises who can answer almost any question for you about the Spirit of America and scheduling your own land excursions. Her name is "Candy" her Toll Free number to call is: 866-807-7386 M-F 9-6 EST on Ext.# 2037. She has full access to the Gulliver’s World Travel Data Bank Service. She can be very helpful to You!

wanting to sail across the Pacific this August
Not much chance of an answer here , you need to go to the waterfront at Seattle and ask at boat rental companies , yacht clubs , stores that sell boating equipment and just any other place that you see connected with yachts and boats.
a dinghy. I don’t know much about sailing. Can anyone recommend a make of dinghy, what sort of price in sterling I should be looking at second hand. I like the look of a topper dinghy, but it looks like only one person can go on it. Could he take friend on that dinghy? What sort of things should I look out for or should I avoid when buying a dinghy. Any help gratefully received. As we are beginners, I don’t want to be conned. Thanks.
Topper Also produce a boat called a topper topez which appears to look like a big boat but there are three different boat set ups dependant on the level of the sailor this boat can fit 2 kids and is made of moulded plastic so for the beginner it is very robust and will take punishment. as your children progress this boat will too as the hull stays the same and the mast and sails get bigger to keep the interest of the sailor going. New i think they are between £1000 and £1500 for the basic set up. which should include the boat the mast and sails and a trailer (launching trolley).
I will go on holidays in France in a couple of weeks, and I will go sailing with my girlfriend, but we do not know where to go. Any idea ?
Saint Tropez is full of millionaires’ yatchts.
On the Atlantic coast, facilities are best at St Malo, Ouistreham (near Caen), Cherbourg, Brest, La Trinité, La Rochelle, Le Havre, Lorient and Bordeaux.
In some ways, Mediterranean France is more suited to those who prefer to find their sailing pleasures ashore. Visiting such glittering places as St Tropez, Cannes or Antibes is an experience if you want to spend some time among the most beautiful collection of yachts in the world. Excellent facilities are to be found at Antibes, in the St Tropez-Cogolin area, Toulon and Marseille.

I have a 8′ Payson’s Ruben’s Nymph and would like to make my job sailing a little easier. I wonder if I could attach the sheet to the rudder or the tiller to lessen the strain. Let me know. Thanks, Tim Brown
It woun’t work to attach the sheet to the rudder or tiller. The only way to make things work is on a course by the wind. You need to balance the sails of your boat well to that course (that is why it should not be too close to the wind because there you need to correct too much). The rudder will usually have to be brought a little bit to lee (tiller to windward) in order to sail straight and keep the course to the wind. If you find the point where tho boat goes straight, fix the rudder and see what she does. You have got it when
- with a bit less wind she will uprighten a bit and then follow the rudder better which means she will fall off. By falling off she will catch more wind and come back to the course
- with a little bit more wind she will heel over a bit more. This brings the driving point in the sails further to lee and as at this point the forward driving vector attacks, she will get a turning moment into the wind. As there is nobody that will counteract with the rudder, she will turn further into the wind. There she will loose a part of the wind in her sail, she will uprighten and fall off again.
Like this your boat will proceed on a wavy line – if there is not too much sea to stop it. However, steering it yourself is mostly more fun. Try it with your eyes closed, you will see it does not only work but gives you the little kick we all need sometimes…

Softly the waves
Move my sailing boat
There is no thunder
I m in dream
In a world with no hunger
And I dream that I have a small kid
Kissing and hug me forever
I have a simple truth
No one will fill my heart
Like when we were together
Don’t go I said
And you just did go
Don’t go I begged
And you closed the door
And as I swing in the small boat
Silver moon is looking at me
I picked the stars and collected them
And put them to play beside me
Each star has a story
They are all lost souls
Each one has a legend
That we wasted through reality
My skin is so fair
My eyes are cold
I can see my body while
I swim towards the silver moon
The path isn’t long anymore
My heart is no more fragile
I left the world for everyone
Cause I don’t fit in the melody
And as I become lighter
I discovered something special
I didn’t collect the stars
I became a star so far
And there is one thing I want to tell you
When you smile to her
I will be the star that winks at you
The old moon will shine for you
Because no matter how hurt I m
I loved you like no one do
I wished you believed me that time
Our love was true
its ok, 4

the charity name is called Happy Ranch
I hope to make outdoor sports that are known for only the wealthy, such as golf, horse riding, sailing, etc. more accessible to those who are in the cities or can’t afford the gears to enjoy those sports (from others donating used gears and more promotion for new clients etc.) and also to protect the environment for tranditional sports and camping etc.
do you think of the name and will it be able to attract people and some supports for it?
I think anything that is geared toward creating happiness in others is a good thing! & protecting the environment to boot is even better.
I think you’ll do fine. You will need to make $ somehow, for upkeep & salaries (unless you are sure to get volunteers) but there are many out there who are looking for places to donate some $ & items for good.
‘Happy Ranch’ is not bad but keep thinking on that as, imo, it should be catchy & somewhat sophisticated. What about ‘Felicity Ranch/Grange/Plantation’ or ‘ ‘Providential Plantation’ or ‘Golden Grange’ or ‘Fortunate Son (or Sun:) ) Recreations’.
Well, you get the picture!
What ever you choose, if you put your heart into it & work hard it’s bound to be successful!!
Best wishes!

I will be travelling from Cape Town (South Africa) to the British Virgin Islands (Carribbean). The trip can take from 4 to 6 weeks.
How do I deal with sea-sickness (if it happens)?
What kind of gear will I need?
make sure you bring lots of warm, cormfortable clothing. I just sailed down island and it gets VERY cold at night on the water. Socks, sweats, etc..also bring a raincoat, some good sunscreen, a hat or bandanna, a good book.(maiden voyage, if you haven’t read it, is a book about an 18 year old manhattanite who sails solo around the world for two years. It’s a great book to read on the water!)Bring a airtight waterproof pouch big enough to at least hold your documentation. Ginger ale or ginger beer is good for a mild case of sea sickness. Or candied ginger works well too. If you take dramamine, make sure you take it before you leave. Start with a small dose. Most people don’t need it at all, and it’ll make you very drowsy. Bring a first aid kit. Baby wipes come in handy for a quick clean-up, you won’t want to shower while underway. Soup and crackers are a good easy meal, not hard to heat up, and if you are seasick, you won’t be able to handle any more than that. And definitely don’t forget your camera.
