recently started sailing lessons, instructor and some others in the class have gloves without fingers to prevent lines from burning there hands, just like to know a good brand or even store that would sell this kinda thing,
or any suggestions about other gear i might need for a beginer
West Marine have some nice gloves for around $20.
Ask the instructors what they use.
The good ones will have a leather palm with another piece of leather on top on the fingers, around the base of the fingers and inside the thumb area.
I like the 3/4 finger ones with an open back.
Other gear
Good pair of polarized sun glasses and a hard case to put them in when not used.
Good book on sailing basics.
A hat or visor
Deck shoes
Windbreaker
Long sleeved t shirt
Sweat pants fo the evening when it gets cooler.
Light hooded sweat shirt, you can always put the windbreaker over it to get warmer.
Suntan lotion
Chap stick
Plastic water proof container to keep you wallet and keys in.
Bag to keep your gear in

Has anyone done the Barefoot Sailing Cruises in Nassau Bahamas?
http://www.barefootsailingcruises.com/
I just can’t seem to find anyone who has actually done this Nassau excursion. I am also wondering if it’s worth the money, and if the snorkel gear is included.
Yes, I’ve done it, and it’s worth it.
They take you to a great reef near Rose Island.
Small group of people (1 boat holds 12-15 ppl , the other 25).
Not a crowd like most snorekling tours. The crew is friendly, knowledgeable and fun.
Gear is included.

After I graduate college since i have time off I’ve been thinking of sailing from Jacksonville Florida to Miami and maybe even continuing on to Pensacola, doing the whole coast of Florida. I have a small laser type sailboat and what to try to get info on how I could prepare for this.
The Laser sailboat is generally classified as a ‘Day Sailor’, which means it is meant to be sailed ONLY during the day. You could, theoretically sail it up the Florida coast, but unless you attached running lights (you’d get busted by the Coast Guard otherwise) you would have to stop before nightfall. You would also need to carry water at the very least, if not food, and plan out your trip well. I would reccomend finding a bigger boat, with a cabin to sleep in, since otherwise it would require some serious navigation to find places to stay each night. Whatever you do, good luck.

i want to convert my laser sail boat from fiberglass deck to a carbon fiber deck, how much does carbon fiber cost, witch paint should i use ( i want to use a clear paint but i want it slip resistant ) and i want to repaint the hull a dark navy blue and a maroon pin stripe on the side of the boat ( where can i find thous colors that r water poor and good for boats) and where can i get parts for a low price for a vang.
the lazer is a great class boat, but by modifying it you will no longer be able to compete in class racing.
carbon fibre is not easy to work with, to get good results, temp, humidity and vacuum bagging will need to be considered.
here is a video on the carbon fiber boat building.
any good marine polyurethane paint will work, we have had good results with petit and interlux brands. you can add slip resistant particles to any paint.
look on ebay (sailboat parts), west marine or james town distributors for parts for your vang. btw since you will not be class legal, why not do full custom rigging on your boat?
hope this helps

boat is 164′ with a cruising speed of 9 knots
Well it’s about 5000 KM Just a little more that Hawaii to Los Angeles. Time of year makes a big difference with the trade winds blowing( how much tacking) You’ll be heading SSW for about 25-30 days..
I’m looking for a place to get quality beginners and intermediate sailing lessons at a good price in or around Manhattan (New York City). Please help!!!
Why don’t you just join a club in South western Long Island (Just past Far Rockaway), it’s cheaper, safer, they start early, so traffic won’t be bad, and you’ll have the whole Bay to yourselves, They use "Flying Scott’s" to train with, so if you dunk them (and you will) they RIGHT easily, (they have a training boat that keeps an eye on you as well out there with you), there is a club behind Peters Clam Bar in Island Park.
Is it possible to live on a boat sailing the seas eating what I catch? If it possible, what would I do for drinks and what is the likely hood of dying due to a whirlpool, hurricane or whale ramming the boat? I’m not sea/boat-smart but lately I’ve been wanting to do such a thing and I just want to know if it’s a decent idea or a horrible idea.
People with experience or people who know anything about this please let me know because I don’t want to start something and then end up regretting it later.
Oh, and I’ve recently been hearing about pirates attacking ships and such on the news? Is it likely that I will encounter a pirate if I do this?
Also, this is not a joke I am 100% serious. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while.
It is a very nice idea, which i also dream about. You can catch fish and live on your supplies for a time.Even you can make your own water with evaporator. But,you will need to berth some places anyway.Your supplies won’t be enough all the time. Moreover it is a nice thing that you’ll see different countries, different people.
But you should be trained enough to do that kind of thing. To know what you may encounter and what will you do for them.
And about the pirates, don’t worry about them. They mostly go after the big fish. Wouldn’t find much in a small sailing boat. But to be cautious, just avoid the dangerous areas, like Somali coasts,Madagascar coasts, Philippines area etc.
Fair winds at all.

the web site where I found the Praddle no longer exists
Try local Marina’s or Boat stores, they may be able to order it for you.
If either one is not close to you, try this site:

This is also assuming going ashore for eating, beaching it to camp. Probably looking at a Hartley 16, Ultimate 16, red jacket etc.
As long as you stay close to shore. If the weather get’s bad.Bigger is better. If you can afford it.I think

I’m starting windsurfing and am wondering exactly what size gear I should use. I’m 13 years old, average size, average weight. I’ve been looking at sails and think I should maybe use a 4.0 to 4.5 sail (not sure, please tell me if correct). I have no clue about boards or anything else though. Please help.
since your just starting, i’d get a kona board- which is a stable long board which is great for all around windsurfing. Kona boards are really fun to ride. short boards on the other hand are not good to start off with- because you must know how to water start, balance, carve, jibe, etc.
i live in FL. on an average windy day its like 15 knots.. but you should start small with like a 5.0 & then work your way up when you get better to like a 6.0 sail. it’ll take time tho. start off practicing in low winds (like 5 knots), then gradually go out into more wind. btw gear can be expensive, especially everything brand new (like almost 2000 total). id rent gear or take lessons fist. then buy or go look for some used gear- which is alot cheaper

which i have to add we have done rather well at, thanks
I was disappointed to find out that our Laser yachts do not have any such device aboard them. How are they supposed to shoot the other boats? this sailing thing has gone right downhill…..

I’d like to join laserforums.org, a forum about the laser class of sailing, but in the registration, there is random question that asks what type of boat is a laser. I’ve tried sailboat, dingy, and everything else there is to guess. Is there anyone part of the forums willing to gove the answer, and if not, is there anyone who may have a good guess?
Oliver has the answers you are looking for, and I like the single-handle olympic class racing dinghy.
My question is: "Why is this forum trying to keep people out?" Boating is inclusion, friends, family and teaching.
This is how sailors get a bad name, that damn snob factor at the yacht club has got to be overturned.
Now could somebody please remove the captain of that obnoxiously noisy Fountain, and get me a gin and tonic.
