Steve Walker interviews Laouen de Kersauson, builder of the new V8 catamaran, the Credit Crunch Catamaran. Laouen explains why VirusBoats decided to build this 8 metre boat and the reasoning behind some of the design aspects, such as the inversed, wave-piercing bow, the chine along the sides and the skeg; features that make the boat safe to sail with your family, durable and trouble free and yet light, exhilarating and great fun, which is why you would want to buy one. Steve also sails the boat with Laouen and other friends and staff of the company so you can see her in action too.

Hobie Cat 16?

admin 28 Sep 2009 | : sailing

I have just bought a new Hobie 16 and have a problem with the hulls moving in the pylons. I have tightened the trampoline as tight as it will go but the pylons are still moving in the top castings. This will cause the pylons to wear and the movement will get worse. Any one have the same experience and does any one have a suggestion for a cure.

This is a movement that should not be happening. Ask your dealer. It may be a structural problem.

hobie cat – on a trapeze?

admin 28 Sep 2009 | : sailing

I am trying to learn how to get onto a trapeze on a hobie 16 but keep falling off. Does anyone have good tips on how to move from the trampoline to the trapeze position? I’m getting my helm very frustrated!

I know what you mean, i’m used to sailing mono-hulled boats on trapeze.

I’m not sure how your boat is rigged, but if you have a height adjuster cleat… It is your best friend.

Say you just tacked… a hobie being a slow turning boat, you got lots of time to trim you jib etc..

1. Clip yourself In (hold onto the handle on the trap wire) (You can also hold onto the Shroud to keep yourself steady)
2. Your front Foot (facing the sail) should get on the edge first.
Then the Back foot
3. Get your weight out, and keep both feet stable on the boat. With Forward momentum, your back foot keeps you steady)
4. Adjust your height using the cleat, to keep the boat flat.
5. Once the boat is flat, keep your weight there, because it is you that is keeping the boat flat.

For the first step, the hobie being a very low boat, you are pretty much going to be crouched or on your knees (although you should be at a ready position). Its hard to describe this whole process, for after practice it gets so natural, and you find your own way to do it.
And i don’t quite understand how you are falling off.

basically keep low, and once you are clipped on the trapeze wire, stay low to keep your weight on the wire, that way you a stable and clipped on. hold onto something while you step out. Soon enough, you’ll be leaping off the side while clipping yourself in and trimming the jib at the same time. But keep your actions, smooth, minimal and communication with your skipper. Once you are on the wire, and your feet on the side of the boat, keep yourself low and feel very connected with the boat, as if gravity has totally changed and you are standing on the side of the boat, that is what the wire should do for you.

Hope this helps.

Whats a good class of boat to introduce kids to sailing?

admin 28 Sep 2009 | : sailing

OK I sailed as a kid. Loved it. We had a sabot and then went to a 125 class dinghy. We also used to sail catamarans (cant remember which class).
I rented a hobie cat last weekend (first time on the water in probably 15 years) and took my family out one at a time to show them how to sail and they loved it.
My question, what is a good class of sail boat (mono or multi-hull) which isnt too expensive 2nd hand, but is suitable to teach the kids how to sail. It has to be big enough for 2 adults so the wife can learn too. I was thinking of an old catamaran but I am not familiar with the classes. A 125 like my old one costs too much. I saw a "cherub" class skiff for sale but I dont know anything about them. Opinions please? Should I just jump in and buy an old catamaran or is that expecting a bit much from pre-teen kids?
I live in Australia BTW so preferably opinions about boats I can find here!

Personally I would look at something big enough to take a few people along. I am a mono hull sailor. I would suggest a Flying Scott, Buccaneer or Mutineer or something along that line. You can do a web search for these class boats.

The Mutineer will be simpler for the kids to handle solo
The Buccaneer is good for two maybe 3
The Flying Scot is heavy enough and room enough for up to 4 people.

I am sure there are other class boats suitable.

Caribbean?

admin 28 Sep 2009 | : sailing

I want to take my family (we have 2 11 year olds) to either Antigua or Anguilla, but I don’t know which resort to stay at. We want a family-friendly resort, but it doesn’t have to have kids menus everywhere and a kids club, as our boys are not interested in those things. Here are the resorts I am considering on Anguilla: Cap Juluca, CuisinArt, and Malliouhana. Here are the resorts I am considering on Antigua: Carlisle Bay, Jumby Bay, The Verandah, St. James’s Club, and Curtain Bluff. (I have also heard of The Hermitage and Blue Waters, but they don’t seem family friendly). We would like a pretty beach, a nice pool, sailing (hobie cats), kayaking (possibly), good food, tennis, and rooms that are at least decent (We can stay in one room as long as it has 2 beds–double or queen). Which resort(s) do you recommend?

My choice for your family would be the St James’s Club in Antigua. It’s family friendly, it has 4 restaurants, several pools, tennis, water sports. All the things your family enjoys. The resort is spread out over 100 acres on it’s own private peninsula. Here is a link with candid reviews and photos from tourists visiting this resort. Hopefully it will be helpful to you.

Alice Oswald Poem Wedding, Help? ?

admin 28 Sep 2009 | : Sailing Tips and Tricks

I have an essay to write on FORM used in this poem, the question is: How does Oswald use form to construct meaning in Wedding?

Wedding

From time to time our love is like a sail
and when the sail begins to alternate
from tack to tack, it’s like a swallowtail
and when the swallow flies it’s like a coat;
and if the coat is yours, it has a tear
like a wide mouth and when the mouth begins
to draw the wind, it’s like a trumpeter
and when the trumpet blows, it blows like millions . . .
and this, my love, when millions come and go
beyond the need of us, is like a trick;
and when the trick begins, it’s like a toe
tip-toeing on a rope, which is like luck;
and when the luck begins, it’s like a wedding,
which is like love, which is like everything.

Would anyone be able to brain storm some ideas please I’m lost?
