admin 31 Jan 2009 | : That's The Spot, Where To Sail
Everyone that I have talked to that likes to sail in Utah, They all love Deer Creek, and I have to agree with them. I think Deer Creek is one of the better spots to sail. The reservoir is long and narrow, and because it is located in provo canyon the wind blows up and down the lake, so you cut across it, and that makes for some short runs, but you can still have some good flying time.
I recommend if you are going to sail this lake, that you sail in the afternoon starting around 3:00 on to the afternoon. The wind seems to be best at the south end of the lake, so that is where I recommend you sail. This is also the location of the Utah Summer Games, and you can have a lot of good sail time. Unfortunately in the 2008 summer games, there was not a lot of wind. But it usually gets pretty good wind every afternoon.
The down sides to this lake are that there is not much of a beach, and what they do call a “beach” is pretty rocky. But there are a lot of picnic arias, and some nice covered arias to relax. If you like sailing, this lake is worth hitting up.
Let me know what you think!

This is a pretty good lake to sail on. The wind typically picks up in the afternoon, but you need to be ready to fight the crowds. There is only one great ramp to launch and unload, so you may be waiting for a wile to get in and out. But this is a great lake that you can have a lot of fun on it.
I am going to say the down sides to this lake are that the beach can be a little rocky, and it is crowded with everyone that comes down from Park City. So there are a lot of really nice boats that are out on the lake.
The positives that are good about this lake are it is pretty open so you have some room to move, and there are a lot of inlets to play around in as well. Also they have tons of picnic benches to relax, and have a great lunch. Because it is in a canyon, the wind blows up and down the lake, so you are cutting across the lake. It’s a lot of fun. The first time that we went there, The wind was a little dead in the morning, but by the afternoon, it was great. We where flying across the lake for hours.
Get out there and have some fun! Let me know what you think!

Yuba Lake is a hidden little treasure in the middle of Utah. This lake is pretty big, and open. Because it is in the more desserty part of the state, it is typically warmer then other lakes in the state. This lake is great for families, and camping. If I could make my recommendations, I would pick out a great little spot on the north shore. There is a ton of beach, and the sand is the closest thing that I have felt to ocean beaches. The water is warm, and you can just back the boat in from the beach. I do not recommend going to this lake on the big holidays, like the 4th of July, it gets pretty crowded. However the lake is pretty big, and there can be a ton of wind to fly your heart out. This is one of my personal favorite lakes to sail on. If you go either at the begging or near the end of the season, you will have the beach to yourself.

Bear lake is one of the best lake to sail. In my opinion, there is nothing cooler then flying around a lake with Caribbean blue waters where the wind pick up pretty good every afternoon. Located on the Utah and Idaho border, this lake is one little secret that I hope everyone with a sailboat finds out about.
I know they hold regattas there every year, and it is worth it to make it to this lake. It is fairly unused lake, with miles to sail. There are also great beaches to park your boat, and have some sweet picnics! If you are traveling one of the best places to stay overnight is Ideal Beach, but you need to move fast, because they tend to fill up pretty fast. But I can also say that you will not be disappointed. If I could recommend a great sailing lake this would be the one.

Wow, Utah lake is one that is a hit and miss. Utah lake has a reputation for me for being not so windy. Although I do see alot of sail boats at utah lake, I don’t petercularly recomend this lake to anyone who wants to go sailing. One thing that really deters me about this lake, besides the lack of wind, is the marina that they made at the docks. It is fine, but if there is wind, and you actually want to get onto the lake, then you need to get through the narrow opening at the north end, and that is almost allways where the wind is comming from. So, tacking out of the marina can be a little hard.
Once you are out on the lake, it’s pretty amazing, on a great day, you can sail forever. But be carefull that the wind dosn’t go away, other wise you can be stuck out in the middle of a verry large lake, on the other hand, you don’t really want to be out in the middle of a the lake when the wind comes up strong. The waves can get quite large, and I am talking like 3ft. waves.
